Ahuriri section now open!
Brief Description
The Ahuriri section of the Rail Trail, constructed by ECan, is now open for hiking and biking.
News Date : 22 December 2012
Detailed Information

The best place to park is at Motukarara. Then cycle north-west along Park Road (about 2 km) and then into the Ahuriri Reserve. The trail through the Ahuriri Reserve is 3.8 km.

With the opening of the Ahuriri section it is now possible to ride the entire length of the Rail Trail from Christchurch (current starting point is the Shands Rd car park 400 m south of the Halswell Junction Rd-Shands Rd intersection) through to Little River. The one-way distance is approximately 49 km. With car parking available along the way many people choose to do smaller return journeys along the trail e.g. Shands Rd to Lincoln, Motukarara to Little River etc. See the relevant sections to find out more detailed information.

Please note that there are several temporary sub-sections along the Rail Trail where cyclists will need to cycle on the road. If you are cycling with young children please consider just using the off-road sections of the trail that can be accessed at a number of points along the way.

The Rail Trail Trust is working with the Selwyn District Council to complete the design and construction of the remaining off-road sections of the Rail Trail e.g. between Edward St and the Rail Trail Link off Ellesmere Rd and also along River Rd (from Collins Rd East to Geddes to Neills Rd).
